Plastics Materials Workshop on Channeling Into The New Sphere of Innovative Material Applications

Funded by the SME Development Fund of the Trade and Industry Department, HKSAR Government, the captioned workshop was held at FHKI on 23 January. This workshop highlighted the global trend of innovative plastics materials as well as the application development of upgraded plastics materials on food, medical and electronics industries. Eric Sun, Chairman of the Hong Kong Plastics Manufacturers Association (HKPMA) encouraged local industry players to carry out R&D on high-end materials which can add value on traditional products.
Kenneth Tam, Sales Manager of Dragonchem Ltd, introduced to participants the bacterial-repellent material, which is a kind of innovative antimicrobial polymer development and application in the medical field to avoid bacteria contamination on medical equipment. On the other hand, Dr Heather Meng, Senior Technical Consultant of SGS Group, talked about the new development of food contact materials and related regulations in major markets to explore how the upgrade of contact plastics materials can keep the food safe. In addition, vibration damping thermoplastic elastomer was brought out by Pal Shi, Product Manager of PolyOne Corporation, to render insights on how this advanced material can add value to electronic products by improving users’ comfort and experience. This workshop was well-attended with around 70 participants.
This workshop is one of the deliverables under the funding project titled “Technology Advancement of Hong Kong Plastics Industry to Tap into the Opportunities under the Strategies of “Made in China 2025” and “Industry 4.0” ” , applied by HKPMA with FHKI as implementation agent.
